ABSTRACT 

  Lighting design is a kind of art creation has become our common knowledge. Changing artistic lighting design plan to a real scene can’t do without technology at all times. Art is nastic. On the other hand, technology is rational. Art combines technology perfectly will produce the excellent light scene. Mathematics is the foundation of all kinds of sciences. The relationship between mathematics, aesthetics, and philosophy are very close. A careful people can find the beauty of mathematics formula, even quite mysterious philosophic theory. The words, “Mathematics is the language of God”, don't exaggerate at all. Analysis and calculation of lighting design rely on mathematics. Using mathematics knowledge correctly, not only can make lighting design more scientific and more accurate, but also can let us see lots of essences of the problem, rather than appearances. This paper will discuss how to use mathematics knowledge in lighting design period through a small example.

1. INTRODUCTION

  

  Beam angle is one of the most familiar and useful concepts for a lighting designer. It is the angle between the two directions opposed to each other over the beam axis for which the luminous intensity is half that of the maximum luminous intensity. What are the relationships between beam angle, luminous flux output and central light intensity? How  these relationships influence luminous intensity distribution curve? We can answer these questions well using mathematics knowledge.


2. BASIC PARAMETERS

    In order to simplify calculating course, we study the luminaires of symmetrical luminous intensity distribution only.


3. CALCULATION OF LUMINOUS FLUX OUTPUT

    Luminous intensity of arbitrary direction of a luminaire, I, is the function of latitude angle and longitude angle. That is I = I (θ,ψ ). Then, the expression of initial luminous flux of luminaire is:


4. LAMBERTIAN LIGHT SOURCE

  Lambertian light source is a kind of widespread light source in natural world. The sun, mat glass lantern, snow, white wall, etc., can be regarded as lambertian light source. Many LED chip itself is very near to lambertian light source too.

According to the data of table 1, we can draw three typical luminous intensity distribution curves as table 2 below:
